The biting November air, thick with the promise of snow, clawed through the threadbare cotton of my Official North Avenue Trade School T-shirt Sweater. It wasn’t exactly a sweater, more like a faded, mustard-yellow tee crudely stitched onto the front of a moth-eaten grey sweatshirt. The logo, a blocky gear superimposed on a compass rose, was cracked and peeling, a testament to countless mornings just like this. Steam billowed from my coffee cup, a weak defense against the chill seeping into my bones. Across the parking lot, the hulking brick edifice of the school loomed, a fortress of practical knowledge. The clang of metal from the auto shop echoed through the pre-dawn gloom, a siren song calling me to another day of grease, grit, and the stubborn satisfaction of making something with my own two hands.
