The first light of Halloween morning painted the dew-kissed pumpkin patch in shades of orange and azure. A lopsided jack-o’-lantern, carved with a comically derpy tiger face, grinned foolishly at the rising sun. Beside it, a smaller blue pumpkin, also sporting tiger stripes, seemed to be whispering secrets. A discarded “Sussy” t-shirt, inexplicably smeared with pumpkin guts, lay crumpled nearby. The air, crisp and smelling of decaying leaves and sugary treats, vibrated with a strange energy. Somewhere, a black cat yowled, its cry swallowed by the rustling corn stalks. The whole scene felt like a fever dream, a bizarre tableau orchestrated by sugar-fueled children and fueled by the lingering magic of All Hallows’ Eve. The derpy tiger seemed to wink.
