Alright y’all, gather ’round! Today I’m spilling the tea on a custom outfit I had the pleasure (and slight panic) of sewing for a client. This wasn’t just any outfit, mind you; this was a “hanging out of a helicopter for a music video” type of outfit. Talk about pressure!
So, what was the vision? Blue gingham top, white belt, and blue shorts. Sounds simple enough, right? Wrong! This required a pattern from scratch, which is always an adventure.
The Pattern Panic
First things first, I grabbed my trusty torso outline. This little buddy gives me a *general* idea of where I’m going. Let’s be real, half the time I’m just winging it. Anyone else feel me on that? It’s like, I have a vague destination in mind, but the route? Subject to change based on inspiration (and maybe a little bit of desperation).
Shorts Story
These shorts, oh man, these shorts. I started slicing and dicing, cutting and praying. The key here is symmetry! Gotta fold it in half, cause symmetry is important. Unless you’re going for avant-garde, in which case, go wild! I laid it all out on some white lining, looking like a chaotic fabric puzzle.
Sewing Shenanigans
Next up, the sewing! I serged all those pieces together and then went back over it with a straight stitch. Pro Tip: stretch the fabric as you sew so you don’t pop any seams. Trust me on this one, seam popping is not a cute look, especially when you’re dangling from a helicopter. All those borders got folded over, stitched, and the extra trimmed off. Precise sewing can feel like a superpower.
Belt It Out
The belt loops were their own tiny mission. Fold, sew, flip right side out, and attach to the shorts. I requested that it be tight I guess she’s gonna be hanging out of a helicopter for a music video. It’s like making a miniature clothing for the clothing itself – a sartorial Russian nesting doll!
The Big Reveal
And just like that, it was done! The client requested that it be tight. I guess she’s gonna be hanging out of a helicopter for a music video. She’s probably on the lookout for where men get the audacity. I don’t know, but I think she’s gonna like it. I poured my heart (and a whole lot of thread) into this outfit, so I hope she loves it!
Here’s a recap of the process for those of you playing along at home:
- The Vision: Blue gingham top, white belt, blue shorts.
- Pattern Creation: Torso outline + a whole lotta guesswork.
- Cutting Chaos: Slicing, dicing, and praying for symmetry.
- Sewing Sorcery: Serging, straight stitching, and seam-stretching.
- Belt Loop Boot Camp: Tiny fabric tubes demanding precision.
- The Grand Finale: A custom outfit ready for its helicopter debut!
Why Custom Clothes Matter?
Beyond just making a cool outfit, projects like this are a reminder of why custom clothing is so awesome. You get something *completely* unique, tailored to your exact specifications. Plus, you’re supporting a small business (ahem, like mine!) and getting a piece made with love (and maybe a little bit of nervous sweat). In a world of fast fashion, that’s something special.

A Little Something Extra: Where Men Get The Audacity?
My client is probably on the lookout for where men get the audacity? I don’t know, but I think she’s gonna like it. This got me thinking about how societal expectations and norms influence what we wear and how we express ourselves. For more of my thoughts on relevant social and political issues, head on over to What Will Wear’s Political & Social page.
Also, I want to give my two cents in terms of humor. What Will Wear’s Humor & Meme category always deliver.
The Audacity of Creation
This whole experience, from pattern panic to final stitch, reminds me that creativity is all about embracing the unknown. Sometimes, you just have to slice and dice, cut and pray, and trust that it’ll all come together in the end. And if it doesn’t? Well, that’s what seam rippers are for!
So, the next time you’re feeling a little lost or uncertain, remember this sewing adventure. Take a deep breath, grab your tools (whatever they may be), and get ready to create something amazing. Even if you don’t *really* know what you’re doing, that’s half the fun!

Here’s the inspiration photos for the custom outfitI have to sew for a client today.Let me show you how it turned out.She wanted a blue gingham top,a white belt and blue shorts.I had to make the pattern from scratch,so I got my little torso outlineto give me a general idea of what I’m doing.Even though I don’t actually ever really know what I’m doing,to be honest. Like with these shorts I’m making,I just started slicing and dicing, cut and pray fold it in half, though, cause symmetric symmetry is important. Then I laid it all out on some white lining. And I’m gonna sew all those pieces I’m pointing at.I’m gonna use my serger, but I’m gonna go back over it with a straight stitch. And I’m gonna stretch it as I sew it so we don’t pop any seams. Then all those borders,I just fold over and do his exact stitch and trim off the extra.I fold the belt in, the belt loops, sew those, flip them right side out, attach them to the shorts, and I’m done.
