We can all agree that there’s something comforting and welcoming about pulling on a well-loved oversized sweatshirt. Whether it’s the soft material draped around your body or the memories associated with it, the appeal is universal. But how do you style it in a way that lets your personality shine through and communicates your unique style?
The Art of the Tuck
A simple yet transformative trick I love is the art of the ‘tuck’. This technique can completely change the look of your sweatshirt, allowing you to modify it to suit your mood, the occasion, or simply to give it a bit more shape.
My go-to style is the ‘bra tuck’. I take the front part of the sweatshirt and tuck it under my bra. The back is left out, giving the illusion of a more cropped style. This works especially well when I’m wearing jeans or pants that aren’t leggings.
A Different Approach
If the cropped look isn’t what I’m going for, and I just want my sweatshirt to look somewhat tucked, I opt for the ‘pants tuck’. I take a little piece of my sweatshirt, tuck it into my pants on the side, and pull it out slightly. This adds a bit of flair to my outfit and gives my sweatshirt a more styled appearance.
The T-shirt Twist
When wearing a T-shirt, I employ the same ‘bra tuck’ technique. I tuck a little corner of my T-shirt under my bra, and just like that, it creates a similar effect.
Tips for Styling Your Oversized Sweatshirt
- Pay attention to the **fabric/material**. The feel of the sweatshirt against your skin is important for comfort. I prefer cotton for its breathability and softness.
- **Size** is key. While the appeal of an oversized sweatshirt lies in its loose fit, be mindful not to go too big. A good rule of thumb is to go one to two sizes above your regular size for the perfect oversized fit.
- Consider **purpose**. Are you dressing for a casual day out, a cozy day in, or a workout? This can guide your style decisions.
- The **price** is a factor, but remember that investing in quality pieces will save you money in the long run. Look out for brands that offer good quality at a reasonable price.
In conclusion, styling an oversized sweatshirt isn’t difficult. It’s about embracing your unique style and using simple techniques to express it. You can draw inspiration from pop culture, political and social movements, humor and memes, and even sports. Remember, fashion is a form of self-expression and a celebration of your uniqueness.

I love oversized sweatshirts, obviously, but when I want to look like I have a little bit more shape, this is how I tuck them. When I’m wearing jeans or just pants that aren’t leggings, I want the top to look like it’s more cropped. I just take the front part and tuck it under my bra. That’s literally it. And I leave the back out. And then if I don’t want the cropped look, but I just want my shirt to look, like, somewhat tucked, instead of that, I will tuck it into my pants. So, like, if I’m wearing leggings and I wanna just do one little tuck on the side, I take, like, a little piece of my sweatshirt, tuck it into my side body instead of the front. I’ll tuck a little piece on the side, and I’ll just kind of, like, pull it out like that, and that’s it. Also, sometimes when I’m wearing a T-shirt, I will do the same thing and tuck, like, a little corner of my T-shirt under my bra, and just like this, it kind of just does the same thing.
